brunch at art smith's table fifty two

Fried Chicken and Waffles

There are so many great restaurants in Chicago. No matter what your culinary preference you will find that delicious food abounds. We had heard that Table Fifty Two's fried chicken and waffles was something not to miss, so we headed down to the Gold Coast one Sunday afternoon to sample just some of Chef Art Smith's tasty brunch treats.

The chicken was, in a word, divine. Perfectly cooked and super moist with a batter that was crunchy and seasoned to perfection. He uses a key ingredient that make his recipe unique - lots of buttermilk. The waffle and Burton Farm syrup with the chicken was a perfect match. Whoever started this combination should have a day named after them - it's just that good.

Three Cheese Mac

Alongside the chicken and waffles we had to try a side cast iron pot of the Three Cheese Mac (combining extra sharp cheddar, finely chopped American and freshly grated Parmesan cheeses). The ooey-gooey steaming bowl of golden cheesey pasta was the perfect companion dish to share among the diners at our table.

Queen Mary

Don't miss the Queen Mary, Table Fifty-Two's ode to the Bloody Mary. If you like heat this one's for you. Served in a mason jar and seasoned with ample fresh horseradish, it comes with an edible skewer of lemon, olive, cheddar cheese, carrot, okra and lime. But they also have Mimosas, Bellinis and a full bar to quench your thirst. If you like the flavors but not the heat, be sure to ask for yours to be served mild.

The restaurant decor is elegant farmhouse, with ornately framed mirrors and crystal chandeliers alongside large farm implements and a pleasant green and white decor. The noise level lively but comfortable. You may not be Oprah but you can enjoy her former chef's delicious cooking and become a member of the Clean Plate Club like us at Table Fifty-Two. Be sure to make reservations so not to be disappointed.
