fun with wine and labels

There seems to be a movement afoot to make wine more accessible and fun. Softening up are the hobnob snobs insisting that their palates sense the aggressive yeasty notes of cigar ashes combined with a stony hint of mineral. Names on labels representing the well-known and aged winemaking empires still exist of course as does the passion that accompanies them. But a new breed of wine makers, and wine marketers, seems more interested in making a good first impression through humor and accessibility, perhaps opening up the glories of the vine to those who may believe that oenophilia is disease rather than a hobby around the love of wine.

We recently took a survey of the marketplace and want to share with you some of the labels we found most memorable. We can't speak to the quality of the wine and will save that for another day. But for sheer cleverness and marketing chutzpah, we enjoyed encountering the following labels. If you crack even a little smile at one of these, then we have done our job.

Monogamy and wine, a heartfelt combination

Bohemian Highway promises a technicolor journey while Big House's The Birdman offers the proverbial flight for freedom

The Prodigal Son evokes images of the wayward child coming home while My Cousin Vino evokes images of Joe Pesci wearing a burnt oragne tuxedo with a ruffled shirt in a courtroom and talking about the "two yoots."

Good Daughter could represent a lovely relationship or wishful thinking. You be the judge.

And, of course, no look at fun wine labels would be complete without including our delightful friends from the Grateful Palate.
Somehow the bubbly Bitch tickles us even more than the still Bitch and seems an appropriate place to call a sweet ending to our brief little survey.
