my mother's kitchen - good for the soul

Recently we had the opportunity to visit a newer restaurant in our neck of the woods, the west side of Chicago. We were pleasantly surprised to find a quaint local restaurant with homestyle cooking that perhaps you may not have experienced.

To make the visit really authentic, we stopped in for a scrumptous Sunday afternoon dinner. They feature a solid list of southern favorites - fried chicken, catfish, short ribs, and the perfect sides - collard greens, fried corn, candied yams, macaroni & cheese and scratch made cornbread.

We tried the fried chicken and meatloaf. Both were delicious and made to order while we waited. The chicken was moist and the batter was crunchy and flavorful. The meatloaf with the tomato gravy with accents of green pepper was also a homemade classic- done very well. The macaroni & cheese was one of the best we've had in the city. It delighted us by being super creamy and cheesy, with just a little topping of bread crumbs for that slightly crunchy texture.

We didn't have enough room for dessert - but bought a slice of caramel cake to take with us, which we enjoyed later at home. We hear that many folks like the  banana pudding and cobblers that are made here from scratch as well.

If you're looking for some comforting, homestyle cooking or a fabulous "Sunday" down home dinner any day of the week check out My Mother's Kitchen.
